    Brakedisc bumpmaps

I wanted to share two brakedisc maps i´ve just made.

This is an example of what i´ve rendered with those maps.

Tip: You can use either one of the two maps or mix/blend them (as i did in the above render)
    have fun!

Thank you two dudes... it was nice of you sharing.... Two One One... Blend two textures with Blend Material with MR? Care to show or share me the setting, color, gloss level, and etc?

the mat i used for my disc is quite complex, and i really tweaked the mat a lot.
its a mr material with a lume metal material (phong) shader in the surface slot.
now this material is really awesome and you can do a lot with it, but you have to unlock it (i explained it in the headlight thread how to do it).
    ok...
    for this lume metal shader
i used a speckle map in the color and specular slot
    a falloff for reflectivity
    checked blurred reflections
adjusted the spread and the samples (you´ll have to see what your machine can handle, coz rendertimes will go straight up if you raise the samples)
adjusted the reflect color to achieve this yellow/brownish tint.

for the bump map go back to the mr mat.
and set up a bump 3ds (not sure what´s it exactly called) in the bump slot.
now here you can use a mix map to simply mix the two maps by adjusting the mix amount.

that´s the setup for this mat...
    hope this helps.

You can also create a Carbon disc Click here to enlarge

These are 20" Carbon brakes from the Bentley upgrade pack - cost as much as some small cars !!! I joke you not.

One of 211s textures would be a good start for that material ...

Thanks two one one... I will try and follow your method and see how it goes... about metal lume do I need to place somethig in camera slot so it can give metal look or effect. I have tried metal lume mat before didn't get good result.

Dave, yes I know about bentley's brake disc... I remember watching top gear on discover channel, the guy said, brake shoe won't need to be replaced for next 20 year.

equinox dont use the standard metal lume!!! it sucks big time!
you´ll have to unlock the "lume metal material (phong)" that´s the exact name of this shader.
and there is no need for a output shader or something else. just unlock it and apply it. works great imo.

dave: i don´t think that the map is very good for this kind of stuff. coz the structure of these carbon-carbon discs is quite different from what i made (at least according to the ref i´ve found)
but you got me hooked Click here to enlarge and we´ll see what i can come up with.

a carbon brake disk is going to look weird, your bump map isnt going to be circles or anything like that at all.. but rather... patch sections that have divits in them, and your material is going to have tons of shades of grey with or without light affecting it.. it would be hard

The lightly cross-hatched bump-map you have would suit it. Not for grooves but for that just out of the shop, lightly machined look to break up the smooth surface.

I'm not sure if I understand you with the Lume shader - you mean another shader than the Metal (Lume) shader ? What extra does that offer ?

    Dave: see yourself
left is metal (lume) and the right is lume metal material (phong)
i used basically the same settings for the two balls (reflectivity, color...)

you can see that the metal (lume) shader has no specularity.
but the metal material (phong) shader has settings for specularity (besides some other additional stuff).

I´m quite fond of this shader because you can get a big variety out of it, and if tweaked right the results look really good ...imo
btw i used the metal mat(phong) shader for the disc and for the caliper in my brakedisc pic at the top of this thread .

Interesting - which version of Max do you use.

I'm playing around this afternoon with a PC that only has version 7, but normally I use 8 SP2. Don't see the metal material (phong) shader anywhere (and it is unlocked) using Max 7.

Where does it normally live ? Click here to enlarge

The control of the colour/diffuse component looks much more controllable - I've had to add fall-off diffuse maps with Metal (lume) and it makes changing the basic surface colour quite tricky. Bit hit or miss. That new shader looks very tight.

I notice it is not documented in the max help files (for Lume). No surprise there !!!

where does it live? hmmm...now you got me. :banghead:
first of all i use max 7
and as far as i can remember i just unlocked it (lume.mi line 475f if that helps)
i also did a quick search in the cgtalk mental ray thread but i didn´t find more info about it.
and make sure you looked for the lume metal material. so its found under L, not M.
