    I'm using phenom x6, and it's a damn good thing for me, deadly fast. But I'm sure that Intel's 4 cores system are also great, so you should look for some pro comparing tests in the internet or just buy both of them to test it by yourself Click here to enlarge In this case you should keep in mind difference in cost of this products, amd wares much much cheaper.

    Also have phenom II x6 T1100 it's 3.31GHz processor. And I also don't have problems with it and in my opinion it works fast + very cheap.

    The Core i5 2500K.

    The Phenom II X6 1100T is great for video editing and design/rendering programs, since those are applications which utilize all six cores. But most games aren't even optimized for 4 cores, so having 6 doesn't really help. There's not much difference between the gaming performance of a Phenom II X6 1100T and the X4 975. The lower price of the X4 makes it better for a gaming build because that's more money available to allocate towards your graphics card (which is the most important component for a gaming build).

    But even AMD's fastest quad-core doesn't compare well to Sandy Bridge- the Core i3 2100 matches or beats the X6 1100T and X4 975 in most games, while the Core i5 2400 beats anything AMD currently has to offer. The 2500K and 2600K just win by a bigger margin.

    If you got a socket AM3+ motherboard, you'd be able to use AMD's new Bulldozer CPUs when they arrive (those are expected to be competitive against Sandy Bridge). But only the first generation CPUs- word is that AMD will ship 2nd generation of Bulldozer CPUs within 6 months of the initial release, and those will require a new motherboard.

    I thought that a phenom 2 x6 and an intel 2500k was a fair comparison since the they have roughly the same prices and the x6 is faster in multithreaded apps while people SAY the 2500k is better in 'everything'. :S
    I know little about the pros ad cons of AMD and Intel other than many people say intel wins hands down, with nothing to support their views. My mate swears by AMD.

    I bought an i5 2500k a couple of months back, (previous computer used an i3 - I don't know about the AMD but this i5 is stable as a rock, idles at 29C for me on a basic air cooling setup. Also you can overclock it to 4.4GHz (stable for 24/7 running) simply by just upping the clock multiplier and no need to mess around with the voltages.

    @3.3GHz the i5 does about 89 GFlops on intel burn test
    @4.4GHz it does 110GFlops

    The i5 also has nice energy saving features where it will throttle the clock down to 1.5Ghz at idle and up it as it needs more. Can't recommend it enough, although you might want to look into the Ivy Bridge series - for a bit more cash I've heard they're a big improvement on the Sandybridge.

    Hi rik3098, if you have not decided yet, then hopefully i can sway your opinion a tad. I have used and favoured AMD over the years, but alas AMD have struggled to come close to Intel on performance and as such they are a good alternative at a very good price. Sadly I have decided to turn my back on AMD and just purchased an Intel i5 3570K to replace my AMD 940 and the difference is immediately obvious just on moving a 3D car design around the screen ... If money is tight buy RAM and get a good AMD 1100 or something, else go for average RAM and a good i5, my 3570 scored higher than the i7.

    Hope that helps

    Martin
