Actually could someone make a quick update for Maya 8.5, I'm getting ready to post some clays here for CnC but the settings are different since the upgrade and I really don't know how to get decent renders.
Here's a real quick way to do a clay render in Maya:
Apply a lambert to your model (I like to use a lighter colored lambert for the model, and a little darke for the background, your call)
In Render Settings under the Common Tab:
- Render using Mental Ray
- Under Render Options make sure the check box for Enable Default lighting is NOT checked (it is by default)
Under the Mental Ray tab:
-Make sure Final Gathering IS checked
(play with setting here for better/longer renders)
And here's the trick
In your viewport window
go to View -> Camera Attribute Editor
Under Environment, make sure yoru background color is very light colored (I do about a 10 percent gray. By default this is black which makes your render completely black.)
