nice tutorial PRIMO but theres a far faster method that may be worth trying Click here to enlarge

download the dirtmap shader for maya & mental ray. Install it and plug the shader into the colour node of a lambert. Add this to all your objects and do an MR render - you wont even need final gather or GI switched on Click here to enlarge
nice thing is you can create another lambert/dirtmap_shader node and adjust colours and brightness but still get that nice clayrender falloff around objects.

its a bit of a pain in the buttocks trying to find the darn shader anywhere but I recently found it again so I've uploaded it onto savefile.com here:

Got a few warnings in the output window though, donīt know what it means...

    "2RC 0.9 warn 082069: finalgather diffuse depth 3 too high set to reflection 3 + refraction 0
RCFG 0.9 warn 542002: angle between normal and geometry normal > 90 degrees
RCFG 0.3 warn 542002: angle between normal and geometry normal > 90 degrees
RCFG 0.9 warn 542002: angle between normal and geometry normal > 90 degrees
RCFG 0.3 warn 542002: angle between normal and geometry normal > 90 degrees
RCFG 0.3 warn 542002: angle between normal and geometry normal > 90 degrees
RCFG 0.3 warn 542002: angle between normal and geometry normal > 90 degrees
RCFG 0.2 warn 542002: angle between normal and geometry normal > 90 degrees"

One thing to keep in mind is the FG radius depends on the size of your object. Generally the max radius should be 10% of the longest length of the scene (excluding ground planes and other abnormally huge objects), and the min radius 10% of the max.
