    High end laptop for University.

    any suggestion guys,
im very very poor at all this new technology. After Pentium 4 i stopped understanding.

So what i need is, something that runs 3dsmax and also renders high end renders.
Something that will play Battlefield 3.

    Atm im looking at AlienWare

Processor: Intel Core i7-840QM Quad Core Mobile Processor 1.86GHz
    (Turbo up to 3.20GHz, 8MB Cache,1333MHz FSB)

    Memory:8GB (8192MB) DDR3 1333MHz

Hard Drive:2 x 500GB Serial ATA (SATA) 7200 RPM, Two Hard
    Drives-Total 1,000GB!

    Graphics Card 2 x 1024MB ATI Radeon HD 5870 CrossfireX (Total 2GB, GDDR5
    DX11)

however i think alienware laptops are soo ugly.

is there anything else out there that looks simple and just as powerfull?

Have you considered a Mac? If so, MacBook Pro is a good and powerful choice.

    2.2GHz quad-core
    Intel Core i7
    4GB 1333MHz
    750GB 5400-rpm1
    Intel HD Graphics 3000
    AMD Radeon HD 6750M with 1GB GDDR5
    Built-in battery (7 hours)

You can also upgrade the memory, HDD and processor, and get an antiglare screen.

I would recomend CLEVO or ALIENWARE, both brands are totally configurable, and u can pick up the components u want, tailor made.
Macs are excellent gear, but if you are going for 3D, i wouldnt go that way. I ve read about all kind of issues with macs and 3D apps, because of graphics card.
One thing i do know.... If you get something with NVIDIA card, you ll be alright regarding compatibility issues.
My clevo laptop runs Maya, Max, Siemens NX, ProE, Catia, Rhino, ICEM, Bunkspeed shot, Keyshot fast and very well. As good as my desktop, which is pretty hi-spec.
There you go, my personal opinion.
Good luck you your purchase, and more importantly, good luck to your university studiesClick here to enlarge

Windows runs great on Macs, both virtually and with Boot Camp (I'm an owner of an iMac myself), but since there are no new MacBook Pro with NVIDIA graphics, there might be some trouble with compatibility with some 3D applications that doesn't support AMD graphics.

YES oscarjo.....that s the problem... and it s a big one. My brother has a mac.... i like that sheet actually.... superb quality. I thought about buying one at the time, but because of 3D, i couldnt really. NVIDIA is what 3D likes......not my fault Click here to enlarge. I know a couple of 3d guys here that have macs... and they are sucking all the time, with viewport issues, and small bugs coming all the time.... u cant see this, u cant see that....BAH...... not a solution. ever.

It s good machine.... You ll be fine with 3D i suppose. But the price is? That s the only way to know if it s a better choice than a alienware or clevo.
Nice specs anyway....yeah asus is good stuff, for general allround laptops.
To get a good computer for 3D from general manufacturers like toshiba, asus, etc, u have to go to the top of the tops in their range...and that s almost always a bad deal when compared to more specialised brands, which offer more for less. That s my experience anyway. Used to be.

    Regards and good luck
