You will have to use a bump map for the side walls and threads, or if you'd like, you can model the threads. For sidewalls, bump maps is mostly used.

Here is a bump map for you

    Good luck!

You could start with my old setup here :

    http://www.dmmultimedia.com/3dtips_09c.htm

The main thing with a tyre are the glossy reflections (depends also how clean or shiny you want your tyre). It should reflect a very glossy verison of the environment, to get that nice shading that is affected by the environment.

One thing to remember is that the bump mapping will not work well if you have an inside scene like the one you posted if it is lit with mainly global illumination. You will need some direct light to show up the bump mapping.

Or try using displacement (which works well in MR). [I believe the new MR iRay renderer handles this much better .... ]

Another thing to add realism is to have the tread colour and reflection as another setting to the side wall (see my link). If you look at reality the tyre tread is usually dusty and dirty. If done subtly it can look very realistic. See my enclosed pic.

Suurland i think uses v-ray for rendering, for MR dave_3ds site has good tutorial on basic tire texture, you can tweak it to your liking.
