    White car paint?

I trying to create an alpine white paint material in Mental Ray, 3ds Max 2011. Has anyone had good results?

Here's a test I've been doing with the Car Paint material. It's still very metallic looking. Any suggestions? I'm going to try with Shellac.

Unless you are lighting your model in the same conditions as your ref pic, this is going to be hard to master.

I'm going to light it in a single colour studio environment.

If you have point sources you can directly affect the specular blooms to simulate different undercoat properties.

In a studio environment, mostly it is diffuse/global light (from big panels) so your relective properties will be key. Undercoat and laquer.

Standard MR Paint should work reasonably. And you can even switch on the flakes as reflective.

Shellac with A&D materials can work well. http://www.cg-cars.com/showthread.ph...l=1#post121992

Have you read some of my Tutorials explaining the mr Paint ? http://www.dmmultimedia.com/3dtips_06.htm

EDIT : from that picture you posted it is simple white gloss - just switch off your flakes in mr Paint, or use a standard white A&D material. I think there are some simple pre-set car paint shaders (I don't use them, not enough control) in 2011.

Thanks Dave. I'll have a good read of those. When I switch off the flakes in mr Paint, I get the resulting image I posted above. Why's it still look metallic (I probably should read your tutorials first Click here to enlarge)?

I'll give the other methods a go.

I've never textured a car before. Maybe it'll be worthwhile posting it on here for a texturing work in progress/critique

I think your paint setup looks OK - doesn't look metallic to me. Try it on the car in that setup, what does it look like ?

Maybe turn down the reflectivity fall-off. Seems quite reflective. Should be more reflective at the edges than looking straight on. Your render look slike it has quite high reflectivity looking straight on. The mr Paint material' fall-off is WAY too high by default.

I'll test it out on the car set up soon. I'm just testing out some of the other materials. Thanks for the tips.
