your question is a little bit relative. There are lots of better processors Click here to enlarge

personally i would prefer an Intel System!

Intel i3, i5 or i7 takes you far. The later ones is with four cores.

I'd say go with Intel... they have better multicores performance than AMD now days.

Intel has always been the "sheet"..... reflected in the price!

I think for modelling purposes the absolute power of the processor isn't making a big difference. For rendering afterwards of course it does Click here to enlarge If you are on a budget side at the moment the AMD hexacore processors are best for the buck but this will change as soon as Intel sells Sandy Bridge quadcore processors.

Well actually intel uses hyperthreadeing (fake cpu cores non physical) amd uses real physical cores so amd cpus are much more fit and can do more calculations.

i will tell u this now, AMD or Intel, doesnt matter, when you render, your still going to be waiting forever for it to render. you might aswell save some money Click here to enlarge i personally dont feel any difference moving from my old phenom II to core i7 (both nehalem and sandy bridge) when it comes to 3d applications.sure intel may be faster, but its doesnt feel that much faster. i would be more worried about things like ram and graphics cards at this point Click here to enlarge

    just my 2 cents

EDIT: i would also worry about motherboard more, when i was using an asus rampage III extreme, in 3ds max, when i tried using reactor 3ds max became unstable easily. i replaced it with an MSI Big Bang X-Power and was able to use reactor, and 3ds max in general with much much more stability.

Well, when you are rendering, all you want is processor power.... So it does make a big difference how the processors handle the situation.
There is a thing called benchmarking..... It s very simple, see the benchmarks of the processors and draw your own conclusion.
The other thing is called compatibility..... Each software has its own personal tastes.
Anyway i m not at all a guru on the subject, but i suppose this is common sense.
