LightWave Vs Maya Vs C4D Vs Max Vs Studio

I'm trying to find the best package for vehicle modelling, however each program has its disadvantages and advantages IMO. I want to be able to produce clean designs using splines but what is the best software for using this?

Also is there any tutorials that stand out above all others. I found many tutorials which only touch on certain modelling techniques or just give a brief outline on how to do a particular car which IMO isn't a tutorial more like a run down on how to go about doing the modelling.

From my experience I have never been able to put my finger on a manual tutorial or a walkthrough of Vray, hence the reason I would rather avoid something I don't know how to use. Which software for rendering would you recommend if any? Do you know where I can put my fingers on a good tutorial for any suggestions?

    All advice appreciated.

First...There is/are no such best software, program or packages that suit best for vehicular modeling.( Unlike Alias surface)

Second... None of tutorials stand out or is above anything. Because tutorial is written based on user's experience level (It would be worthless if a user that is above level going through tutorial on the area they already knew)

To be honest with you, it'd be hard to tell you which software you should use... so, I strongly suggest you install trial version of software, program or render engines that you re interested or intrigued about. Go through their basic procedural by understand their tools or functions and etc until it you decide which one of these would float your boat.

    Hope that helps

The problem with this thread is that 100 users are gonna give you 100 completly different opinions. Just as EquiNOX said, there is no perfect software as each of them have advantages...
Its more about the user experience and the techniques you use than about the software package you're working with.

So for now, just take the one you feel most comfortable with.

As they say you can't fix a car without getting your hands dirty, try out the software and see which one gives you the result you want best.

I switched from Cinema 4D to 3DS Max.

    I have never looked back.

If you ask my opinion I would tell you 3DS Max. If you asked my advice - I would tell you to try them all.

i tried 3dsmax, xsi and maya

for animation purposes and coding, maya roxx
the modeling tools in 3dsmax are pretty amazing.

and dont worry, as soon as u know how a 3d program works, it doesnt take lots of time to adapt to other 3d software.
i for example didnt need more than one week to get absolutely comfortable in 3dmax since i am pretty good in maya.

xsi is kinda "artist only" thing, it crashes way too often for my taste Click here to enlarge (and the gui is hideous Click here to enlarge)

    my 2 cents.

#edit1: i am just changing to 3dsmax because my company requires it (if ur interested y i am even using another 3d package)

It depends on your poly modelling technique.
If you model based on curves , to create nicely distributed meshes, MAYA is the way to go. The best by miles.

If you model poly by poly or box modelling, then MAX is probably the best one. MODO has some cool poly modelling tools too.

Anyway, why not using MAX and MAYA? Best of both worlds, i would say.

IMO poly modelling in is tedious UNLESS your really experience in using it, I have attempted it before but I rather not spend more time tweaking but more time modelling if you get my drift...

i have touched on alias studiotools briefly on my uni course which I think was pretty cool, and if I can nail it and just sweat some hours on it I could get to a good standard... I have a really good grasp of more cad applications out there at the moment that's why I was wondering if splines is the best way to go...

I may try Maya there are some in depth tutorials which I am thinking of purchasing.

I value you all your opinions appreciate your advice.

If you have experience in CAD apps, then maya is perfectly suited to you.
Make 4 sided surfaces with curves, and output result as polies, with many parameters for surface tesselation control.
And that s about it regarding maya and polies.LOL. But very handy. XSI, comes close too in that aspect. It s very clean XSI, unlike maya that s gets worse over time, fully bugged .

Personal choice i d say. XSI, Maya, Max, are in my opinion the best choices for poly modelling.
Try and see what makes you more comfortable.

    Good luck mate
