    1. Make sure you have the newest service pack for 3ds max.
    2. When you hit the render button, open the task manager and watch the memory usage. 4GB might be a little too few for 3,3m polygons.

I dont know how much polys you can render with 4GB Ram but i think, its because of the RAM.. you need just more.

On your macbook you cant do much but if you have enough slots on your PC mainboard, buy more RAM to solve this classic Problem Click here to enlarge

One thing that helps me in such situations is VRay proxy, you can reduce the polycount by half using proxies . Also lower the resolution on textures that don't need to be that good quality or are not visible in your render.
Another trick is using VRay frame buffer and choosing to save the file as a "vrimg" format, that way vray saves the image on the go and saves some RAM, then you can convert the vrimg to a exr with the vrimg2exr tool or view it in max by going to "File" -> "View image file"
Using those methods I rendered 2.5 mil poly with 2G RAM at a 5000x3200 resolution
Hope I helped Click here to enlarge

I have some problems like those...
maybe it could help you a bit HERE
what I would do to "manage that" in order is:
-check if the version of 3ds max is the 64bits...
-check if you have too many multi/sub materials
    -use proxies as KiRO said
    -decrease the poly count
-decrease the material textures (vray displacement specially)
    -decrease the resolution quality
-and if nothing works I would surrender Click here to enlarge

Oh well, I am really late answering this but the models I render are usually between 9 and 13 million polys. I've got 24 GB of ram and I'm running dual xeon X5680s, 3.33 GHz. My graphics card is an Nvida Quadro FX 3800. You need a lot of power to render the big models! With that setup though I was able to import 5 cars into one scene and render in Max with Vray without crashing. Click here to enlarge My machine would have blown up if trying that in Maya with Mental Ray.

I render large models like that on my pc.
    I7 2600 k 16 gigs of ram 2 gig evga 550ti..win 7 64bit.
The machine uses almost 4 gigs of ram and 60% of the cpu.Using affitity and only 4 cores.
I use Iray, Vray and Mental ray with no issues.

Let's not brag. I guess you'll either have to upgrade RAM on your computers, (MBP can be upgraded to 16 GB) or try to render with layers, or hide object you're not working with. Or (I have no experience of this) try to use VRay Proxies.
