Today, the field of digital imaging is a widely known matter of fact - everybody knows that many images are completely made with 3D-software. It rather turned into a must for a 3D artist to produce realistic objects with the help of 3D-software, because current 3D-softwares already enable the users to create complete images or even whole movies digitally. The only problem is to achieve images or whole movies in a short period of time. - As everybody knows, this is hardly possible.
Less known is however, how big the differences between the common 3D-visualization-softwares are.
And almost no one knows the golden opportunity VRED, developed by PI-VR, offers in this area. VRED with its realtime rendering capabilities allows a careful and efficient working method which at the same time is extremely time- and power-saving. It enables the user to produce extremely photorealistic high-end-material which is almost indistinguishable from reality - within minutes.
This competition, organized by PI-VR, is addressed to all doubters and traditionalists, to all who are keen to experiment or just curious. So this competition is basically addressed to all kind of 3D artists.
The task is to generate photorealistic images that are as close to reality as possible - in only 4 weeks. The material only has to fulfill one condition: it must only be generated using VRED Photo and the prepared dataset PI-VR provides.
This competition gives you the chance to get noticed and to win an outstanding price at the same time. Leading experts in the major fields of product visualization will judge all entries to elect the winner.
Prizes
The winner receives a full VRED Photo licence including support and updates for the duration of one year, this correspondents to a total value of about 15.000,00 EUR.
The second winner receives a NVIDIA Quadro FX 3800 graphics card, this correspondents to a total value of about 850,00 EUR.
The third winner receives the SpacePilot Pro spacemouse from 3DConnexion, this correspondents to a total value of about 475,00 EUR.
Register: The registration expiry date is 08.03.2010. To register, just send a short email to: competition@pi-vr.de.
Timing: Every registered participant will receive an email on 09.03.10, including further instructions. The participant will then be able to download a full VRED Photo-license which is going to be limited in time for the duration of the competition, and the prepared dataset.
The task is to create photorealistic material, using only VRED Photo and the dataset provided by PI-VR. There are no specifications regarding layout and concept, the only condition is to only use VRED Photo to create the image(s).
VRED Photo will be provided in full functional range, but the licence will expire automatically by 29.03.2010. Deadline: Final Deadline for handing in the image(s) is 09.04.2010
Winner: Amongst all transmittals a total of 3 winners will be selected by a highly qualified jury that will be arranged by P-VR . The winners will be announced on 19.04.2010 via email, on the competition-website and CG Cars. Outstanding pictures regarding quality and photorealism will be awarded. Every participant is allowed to send in up to 3 pictures, each of them will be evaluated individually. It is not possible though, to win with more than one picture at the same time.
Organization
Please send the pictures to competition@pi-vr.de.

- The title of the image
- Short description of your first impression using VRED Photo (max. 100 characters)
- Name/address/Phone number and/or firm, mail address of participant
- Optional information: what is your job? Which software do you use normally
Eligibility requirements
We accept a maximum of 3 pictures p. P. The material has to be provided in standard-hd-resolution (1280 x 720px) in a loss-free dataformat, such as .tif or .png., it has to be sent to competition@pi-vr.de via email.
Each picture in the email hast to enclose further information, such as name, address and phone number of the participant. By sending the email, the participants accept these mandatory eligibility requirements.
A jury arranged by PI-VR will judge the pictures. Legal recourse is excluded.
Any participant grants the PI-VR the gratuitous, unlimited and licence free rights on the sent material for use and publication in any media. He agrees to the publication of his - namely branded - pictures by PI-VR.
PI-VR is not responsible for lost, destroyed, stolen or elsewise missing material. Deadline for this competition is the 01.03.2010.

You warrant that your work is original and does not infringe any intellectual property rights, and you grant PI-VR the right to publish your picture (and only your picture). PI-VR staff and moderators cannot participate.
want to ask - what you mean by saying "dataset" ? F.e. a 3d model and hdri ?

Must admit, I dont really know whats expected from entrants. Does this software texture and render existing models? Tried looking around their website but I still dont really get it.

His english is not that good, so he might missed it.
Oxydo you will get an email on 9th of March , very soon also
( Dobit ćete e-mail na 9. ožujak ) hope this is correct, I used google translate
I wonder how many ppl are participating in it. This is going to be a nice competition for sure.
cheers,
exidge
exidge ( Dobit ćete e-mail na 9. ožujak ) properly will be: ( Dobit čete e-mail 9. ožujka)
I realized that, but ... 9th of March will be too late if they do not get mail ...due to technical reasons ...... the only safe way is to send multiple mails I guess , Whatever it probably will be OK.
Oh, I almost didn't see the difference but now I do! Instead of ćete you use čete and ožujak is ožujka. What's the difference? Never heard Croatians talking

Yep, participating for every price.. yea hehe. Send 3 mails then they will know for sure. Hehe The big issue is the licence they have to prepare for every participant ! That's why it works only this way in that short period of time.
But Brombaer, if you read this you're welcome to join our conversation!
For everyone, feel free to ask questions, and we will try to help you!
For example: I'd like to know if the content like geometry , backplates + HDRIs will be provided aswell , or if it is completely free to use what you want to?

Well ... call me slightly biased since I am one of those who is behind VRED ... but I think its a good idea to chime in here.
It's always hard to dinstiguish between those different tools (be it showcase, hypershot, vray rt or whatever), each has its primary user base and often the price ranges differ quite a lot. So I am not trying to tell what others can't do instead I am trying to explain why we think our tool could be useful and who our user base is:
The main assets of our tool are ease of use and speed/quality in rendering. To be refined this means:
- easy import of CAD files (seamless tesselation) and lots of functionality to clean them up within hours/days (depending on the amount of variations a product has)
- easy setup of materials. We have a material type system inside (no shading networks ) which makes it very easy to get a good look without being a 3D expert for quite some years (of course this gets easier if you have experience)
- our software is very stable because it is used also by engineering people in automotive industry for realtime stuff
- it can deal with very big datasets ... we made a model with 550 million polygons, lots of textures and several HDR environments, all in 55GB of main memory. If you put more memory into your machine you should be easily in the position to render more than a billion polygons.
Our user base is:
- design/engineering people from automotive companies. They have quite short deadlines and they need software that makes their jobs as easy as possible while maintaining good visual quality (quality varies from user to user ... some of them need OpenGL quality running 30hz interactive on big presentation screens ... while some of them need accuray to decide how the real car will look in reality)
- 3d agencies working with data from marketing departments of car manufacturers ... also tight deadlines ... corrupt data ... and lots of possibilities to cheat^d^d^d^d^d tune a scene that a car looks adorable and gorgeous
- real photographers that go into cgi and need a software that they can understand AND use (advertisement agencies are really excited when their CD can stay close to the photographer discussing the look to be achieved)
I am sure we will post more footage in the near future and we have some ideas in the back we are going to disclose here within the next weeks.
Of course we are looking forward to critism/question/remarks.

Hi Paul, it's a 3D model, HDRI and backplate can be chosen freely.

Hi Dave, we are also very looking forward to the results. I am very confident that you will not be disappointed.

You can render and texture with our software, it is a complete standalone software package and not just a render plugin. For most users here we may look like entrants, but this software is being developed since 2001 and we have a very good reputation among our users, which we take very seriously.

Hi, there I am. Sorry for the late reply, I was on a business trip the last two days and didn't expect this thread to start exactly when I was offline
The geometry will be delivered, HDRI and backplate can be chosen freely. The contest focuses on the creative image creation capabilities of the participants, which is the reason to use the same geometry. Post processing is not permitted, since excessive post production can mask the ugly output of a 3D rengering engine. With a good rendering engine and artist the amount of post produktion should'nt be very high (of course there are image creation ideas that are way beyong what a 3D software can deliver but thats not the idea behind the contest).
Good luck to all participating
Matthias
