In fact I need to update that section to explain how I did that. You can find out how I did this with Max8 here (with group input from others):

Strangely that thread is titled : Headlight Lighting in Max with Mental Ray - alyx, a little search would have found that ...

But there are newer tools to use in Max2008/2009.
