TUTORIAL: Mental Ray Production Shaders in 3DS MAX

I have actually started to write this tutorial. It will be in several parts. Suitable for Max 2008 (with modifications) and Max 2009 using Mental Ray and the mr Photographic Expousre tone mapping.

So far I am planning on including this:
    1. Simple scene setup to use the Mental Ray Production Shaders in 3DS MAX. Simple Matte example using LDR JPGs and the Chrome Ball environment mapper.
    2. More advanced version of the above using HDRIs. A little explanation of creating simple HDRIs. Using Chrome Ball and normal 360 environment.
    3. Advanced tip and tricks using hidden shaders and other features.

The first part should be up soon with all the files needed to create the example scene (Max 2009 - possibly also Max 2008).

i'm sorely tempted to make this a sticky right now. if people can get that kind of results shown in the pics, it'll be quite deserving of a prominent place on cg-cars. thanks in advance for all your hard work dave.

    regards,

I will supply all the files needed to create that image I show above.

Just working on Part 1 - but having to split it into 2 parts as it is a bit bigger than I expected. But part 1a is finished, working on part 1b now. I want it completed so that you can make that image, so will post the tutorial when I have tested everything and collected all the files.

Time for a wee teaser I think Click here to enlarge

Hey - don't spoil it for others !

    Have patience. Come on.

I have removed it. I will post when it is completed and I have checked everything.

I will not post anything to my website now until I have finished. I will check locally on my own PC.

very informative dave. i won't be the first to post results but i have a question for ya. This tut is for max 2008/2009 only? I know the production shader was a max 2008 first (know is a strong word, i think rather). I can swear i read on master ZAP's blog about importing them into max9, would that work for this tut? once again, thanks for taking the time to make this tutorial, i know many of us appreciate it.

    regards,
    rodder

This tutorial is only really aimed at Max2009 users (with a little hint on how to use Max2008). Sound familiar with asking for older versions .... LINK ?? Click here to enlarge

I can't remember if I tried some of these shaders with max9 - the LAMRUG guys had some early beta test versions. I think I started with Max2008.

Max2008 is a really worthwhile improvement from Max9 - especially the mr Photographic Exposure settings. And Max2009 continues with the improvements.

I understand completely dave. It was more curiosity than anything else. when i have the money i'll be getting a new version of max. i should also point out that my question differs from the one in your previous tut in that DBkenn was suggesting that tutorials in newer max versions were out of the reach of many. i was just asking for my own edification. anyhow, thanks for the quick reply

    regards,
    rodder
